Nurt powstał w literaturze, później wyewoluował w kierunku malarstwa i rzeźby. Surrealizm ukształtował się w latach 20 XX wieku – punktem początkowym był surrealistyczny manifest Andre Breton’a opublikowany w 1924 roku. Wyrasta z fascynacji światem podświadomości, snu , przypadku, halucynacji i stanów psychicznych, w których działania umysłu są swobodne i niczym nie kontrolowane.
Inspiracje i przedstawiciele surrealizmu
Na surrealizm oddziaływała przede wszystkim twórczość G. Arcimboldo’a (portrety z warzyw), Hieronima Boscha z symbolistów, a także twórczość Giorgio de Chirico. najwybitniejszymi surrealistami byli:
- Rene Magritte (“Kochankowie”)
- Salvador Dali.

- Giorgio de Chirico,
- Yves Tanguy,
- Joan Miro,
- Francis Picabia
- Max Ernst,

Rozróżnia się kilka typów malarstwa surrealistycznego, między innymi abstrakcyjny, figuratywny oraz kolaż.
- Abstrakcja surrealistyczna:
– unikanie geometrycznych kształtów na rzecz bardziej emocjonalnego oddziaływania naturalnych form organicznych (rzeczywistych lub wyimaginowanych) – przedstawicielami tego typu są Jean Arp, Andre Masson, Joan Miro lub Yves Tanguy.
- Surrealizm figuratywny
– artysta wykonuje autentyczne przedmioty, ale łączy je w sposób nieoczekiwany, np. S. Dali “Stół słoneczny”
– zmieniają się cechy przedmiotu, np. ciężka skała unosi się jak balonik,
– zmiana skali, np. wielkie jabłko w pokoju – Rene Magritte “Pokój przesłuchań”
zbijają z tropu podpisami i tytułami.

- dziwaczne zbiorowiska zwykłych przedmiotów
